Nelson Lakes (21st Feb)

This morning waking up was, of course, glorious sunshine! So I headed back to the beach and took the photos of the little village and the beach with the sunshine instead of the rain before heading off to Nelson for the Saturday morning market.

The Nelson market was great fun; it’s full of buskers, craft stalls and food stalls and plenty of locals. When I got to the city around 10am, which I thought was pretty late, it was very quiet and I did wonder if this market was as good as I’ve read it is but once you get into the centre of the city it’s really busy and by the time I left it was positively heaving.

After the market my next port of call, and it turned out to be my last for the day, was Nelson Lakes National Park.

Once I got there it was beautiful, hardly anyone about, just some of the local villagers partaking in canoe races which looked fun but hard work if I’m gonna honest!

The tiny village of St Arnaud looked really lovely to me, a fantastic location and no-one there! Perfect! So after a very quick look at the lake I headed into the village in search of accommodation. I found the only backpackers which was right next door to and part of the only motel in the village which was right next to a part of the only cafe/bar/restaurant in the village which just so happens was over the road from the only petrol station and grocery store, I think also run by the same people!! They’re on to a good thing there!

After dumping my bag I headed off back towards the lake for a couple of relatively short walks around the area and around the lake front which was lovely. The locals are still paddling up and down the lake and I’m still not partaking, I do feel though that my NZ experience wouldn’t be complete without some kind of kayak experience, maybe I’ll save it for Wanaka.
