I’m not sure how many people walk the crossing each day but there are quite a few buses laid on and it is billed as the most popular day tramp in NZ so I’m guessing lots.
Mount Ngauruhoe (aka Mt Doom from Lord of the Rings!)
It was a relatively easy start to the walk which kinda lulled us into a false sense of security. We then came across the Devils staircase (I’m sure there’s a Devils staircase, on every walk I do), it certainly feels like it!
We headed up over the crossing on what was a lovely walk, the weather was really fantastic for it and as we headed up over Red Crater down below us we could see the gorgeous Emerald Lakes and Blue Lake in the distance.

Me!!
The lakes were beautiful, the colour was truly amazing and the walk itself was really very enjoyable, although the last hour on the way down was tough on the knees. I did the whole thing in just over 7 hours which was about average so I was really pleased with that and it was great to get out walking. Coming back on the bus though we were all shattered and most of the bus fell asleep (the people on it, not the actual bus) and lucky for us I think our driver had had most of the day off and managed to stay awake!
Blue Lake
Emerald Lakes
Once back at the hostel I then headed off to see people jumping off of bridges bungy style, I'm still holding with saying I'm not gonna do that activity, but I guess watch this space to be honest! :-)
