Wellington (16th Feb)

Wellington is the capital of New Zealand and much like any other capital city, except cleaner and nicer and warmer and friendlier and more to see and more to do and and and and ……….. so really actually nothing like many other capital cities! I still only decided to stay for one day though before heading off to the South Island!

So today it’s a case of hitting the hot spots. First off I decided on an early start but then the battery on my phone (and therefore my alarm) died out overnight and I didn’t wake up till 9am! I guess I needed the sleep though huh?

I eventually headed off into town and decided on the cable car up to the botanical gardens, the cable car was nice as was the museum at the top and the views of the city (before it started to rain anyway).

The cable car

At the top I came across loads of cruise passengers, it’s not the first time I’ve come across them (or similar of course) but it’s interesting and so not something that I ever want to do. They come into a different port everyday are up early and dropped off very briefly at some point of interest before being picked up again and whisked off to the next point. It’s kinda funny as well cause they all have stickers on them with their bus number and personal number, I guess it’s all in case they get lost! They all seem to know each other as well which is kinda nice, but so far my experience of them is that as soon as they arrive somewhere, instead of enjoying where they are they head straight for the gift shop! Great for the New Zealanders (I guess) but not so great for the New Zealand Experience!

I made my way back to the city through the botanical gardens which was nice and then took a walk along the quay before heading back to the hostel to catch up on blog stuff and get ready to head off very early in the morning. Just hope I find the ferry terminal ok at that time in the morning, oh and of course hope the car starts ok cause I actually left the boot light on last night for around 18 hours!

The observatory (which was closed!)
