Rotorua and Kiwis (the bird variety) (10th Feb)

So at the moment I’m toying with spending about a months budget on a trip to an active volcano or not! Lots of thought going into that one.

While I’m contemplating the decisions I decided to head off to Rainbow springs and the Kiwi Experience. Now Kiwis apart from being fruit and people from NZ there are also really cute little birds which are actually more mammal than bird. At this point I defy anyone that disputes evolution, as these little birds, due to no natural predators prior to the British introduced species, have evolved to have no use for wings and therefore are flightless. In addition they have developed very strong legs like mammals and have bone marrow like mammals, both of which birds do not have.

So this is how I found myself at the Kiwi Experience at 10am checking out their conservation program. Due to introduced species, without intervention, the Kiwi chick has just a 5% survival rate in the wild which has increased to 70% with the programs work. It does appear to be a good program although what I didn’t discover was what their survival rate was when reintroduced into the wild.

In the afternoon I headed off to the thermal village which is where the Maori permanently live and work within the very geothermal area. We were guided around by one of the residents who introduced us to their life and their way of life over the years which was very interesting. We were shown the real way of cooking hangi and the practice of communal baths with the natural hot springs. It seems to be a very natural way of life but also quite a modern one as well.

In the evening I headed off to the Polynesian Spa for a hot spa bath. The effects of this is supposed to be healing and rejuvenating. Well healing, ok I’m not so sure I have anything broken but go ahead if its part of the deal, I was just there for the rejuvenating aspect. And it worked, I came out of there feeling and looking 10 years younger, no really I did! Unfortunately by the time I get home the effects are going to have worn off so you’re just going to have to take my word for it.
